In the year 2005, make your home...

a haven of peace - Times Of India (Jan 2005)

Anshu Pathak

Where to begin…
  • Make lists, write down the things you must do, you will feel more in control.
  • Remove bulky carpeting and draperies.
  • Rearrange furniture for easy accessibility.
  • Suggest a spirit of adventure with bright, daring colors.
  • Bring in exotic orchids or tropical paradise flowers.
  • Include artwork that is pleasant to eyes.
  • Hang wind chimes in the windows.
  • Burn incense and naturally scented candles.
  • Display family photographs, other treasured artifacts and heirlooms.

IT’S sheer common sense that tells us that every home should be relaxing and stress free. After all, our homes are our refuge, and the expression of our refuge, and the expression of our personalities and creativity. But somewhere along the way, we acquire chairs that cause back aches, collections that require dusting and polishing, carpeting that emits toxic fumes, entrainment centres that command our attention, electronics that click and beep and papers that grow into weary piles of obligation. So we spend countless hours cleaning and maintaining these possessions.

A home that soothes and heals is not created overnight. No home is an island. It must exist in a larger environment. There is no question that clutter rattles our nerves and drains our spirits and as you recreate your home, you and your family will want to seek ways to clear away or sensibly store odd assortments of knick knack, deciding what is important and what is not.
Let your instincts be a barometer, you will know that you are on the right path when you believe that change is possible. Observe, the places where clutter accumulates, the tables that are often piled with papers, the rumbled clothing tossed across the chairs, the tangle of boots blocking the stairs. See the telltale fingerprints on the walls, clues like these will reveal the highly trafficked parts of your home.
All you have to do is to think beyond the predictable and allow the room and places to take on new, unexpected roles.

Designing spaces in our home is a way of reaching for a type of zone where we can feel safe and protected, loved and loving, creative and productive and completely at peace. Fengshui, Vaastu Shastra, color therapy, aromatherapy, our rituals and various other design techniques are all tools to help move up towards this ideal. They become most effective where we use them with an understanding of what our homes mean to us.
